Anita Barzey, Founder of Motivate Me Tutors and an Independent Travel Consultant at The Holiday Fixer
An inspirational and versatile entrepreneur operating within the education and travel sectors
I was born prematurely, but had no issues with my sight until I was 10. I remember so vividly the morning my mum rushed me to A&E, because I’d tried to pour a glass of orange juice but couldn’t see anything, so it went all over the table.
Displaying symptoms of meningitis, it transpired I had Intracranial Hypertension, which is a build-up of pressure around the brain. A shunt was fitted in my brain to my stomach and the excess fluid drained, but I lost a significant amount of sight due to lasting optic nerve damage (about 65%).
For the next 18 years, I managed with the shunt and had no major relapses – doing everything I could do to live my best life – but recently (including Christmas and New Year) I’ve been in and out of hospital for numerous procedures. As a mum of two young children (aged three-and-a-half and 14 months), as well as running two businesses, it’s essential I take care of myself and listen to my body. Thankfully, I’m blessed to have an extremely thorough surgeon, which makes life a great deal easier.
Motivate Me Tutors was founded eight years ago following a full-time career as a teacher. I found my business niche early – specialising in prepping students for their Eleven Plus exams through one-to-one English tuition. Recently, I’ve recruited two tutors to meet customer demand and assist me with my health needs, and I’m currently growing an online-based service.
Travel has always been a passion of mine and I knew that, someday, I would do something within the sector. This month, I’m celebrating my one-year anniversary as an independent travel consultant at The Holiday Fixer. After reaching out to the business, I knew almost instantly it was a perfect opportunity… I just wish I’d done it sooner!
My sight loss has played a positive obstacle in shaping my character and wanting to always strive for more. Don’t get me wrong, there have been countless times when it has made me doubt my abilities and left me feeling insecure, but in no way has it stifled my vision for the sort of success I want to create for myself and my children.
