Helping business owners and entrepreneurs to secure media coverage by positioning themselves as an expert in their field
When I was 11, I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. Four years later, my career aspirations took an altogether different path…
On a return from a family holiday in the Caribbean, I wrote an article about my fabulous trip for the school magazine and loved it! Part of me recognised what I was doing was similar to being a journalist, so I decided to find out more.
I began collecting journalism-related cuttings – especially about how to get into journalism – and kept them in a folder. I knew for certain I’d found my calling when I added to this the fact that I liked finding out more about people.
After studying Media & Cultural Studies at university, where my folder proved to be an invaluable resource, I applied for a nine-week intensive Magazine Journalism course and landed one of only 12 available spots. Six months later, I landed a job as a reporter/sub-editor at a newspaper called ‘The Weekly Gleaner’. A year later, at the tender age of 24, I became its editor. The five years I spent there were hugely enjoyable, but the time came to seek a fresh challenge.
The next chapter of my career was at BBC News Online, where I worked in a busy multimedia newsroom alongside broadcast journalists covering London-based news. After a decade of being there, an opportunity to take voluntary redundancy came up, so I took it in order to be around more for my two boys, who were one and five at the time, and pursue entrepreneurship desires.
I successfully managed to do both – including pursuing the lifelong dream of running my own magazine when an opportunity to purchase an online sales publication from its US-based publisher came up in late 2015. I operated it for 12 months before launching my PR agency in late 2016. Having always provided specialist PR support on a freelance basis throughout my entire career, and getting my second client onto national TV, this was the next logical step!
Through strategic one-to-one coaching, my mission is to empower business owners (mainly, but not exclusively, women) to do their own PR and position themselves as go-to experts in their field.
