Giulia Evelina Fenci, Founder of A Shot of Ginger

A certified personal trainer based at High Performance Conditioning in Salford

I was born in Italy and brought up in a B&B run by my parents under the Tuscan sun.

At the age of 19 I left home to come over to the UK to study Civil Engineering. Living in Manchester, I continued my studies and completed my PhD in 2018. I then got a job at a prestigious international company and worked there for 18 months before deciding to give it all up to follow my dream of becoming a full-time personal trainer. It didn’t take me long to realise that the life I was living was not fulfilling and that I’d been lucky enough to have found the right path for me; it was just a case of taking the leap.

I’d started to develop A Shot of Ginger as a side hustle while I was studying at university and continued to refine my offering while I was working as an engineer. I chose that particular name because I feel it’s an appropriate representation of me: a fiery redhead who is very honest – even if it can sometimes leave a bit of a sour taste!

It was the three years I spent studying for my PhD which were the game-changer… Feeling uncharacteristically lost, going to the gym gave me focus and a reason to get out of bed every day. I went from tentatively attending my first session with a personal trainer at High Performance Conditioning to becoming more confident, independent and then totally committed – growing fitter, stronger and more knowledgeable with every workout.

Later qualifying as a PT in my own right, I landed a job at the gym I felt had saved my life in part. I wanted to be there for people who needed a little saving too, which is something I love.

I’ve been a full-time personal trainer since August and already I’ve had so many brilliant opportunities come my way. Even though I might still be relying on my savings for a while, I know that all the energy and hard work I’m putting in now will be rewarded in the long run. Most importantly, I am happy and you can’t really put a price on that can you?
