Laura Hogan, Owner of JellyBean

A digital marketing agency specialising in SEO, digital PR and putting clients’ needs first

I fell into the world of marketing after doing some work for a local radio station. I’d recently graduated from Birmingham City University with a Journalism degree and took an online marketing executive role with a mobile phone accessories company. It was here that my interest in the industry undeniably spiked – teaching myself as much as I could whilst also learning a great deal from my employers.

In 2013 I joined a digital marketing agency and, over a six-year period, worked my up from junior to director level – eventually managing a team of 17 people and overseeing the needs of our client base.

Professionally I was doing well, but my personal life took a significant knock following the breakdown of a long-term relationship. I’d been with my boyfriend for six years and we had a house together, which meant we had to live with each other after the split for five months until we were able to sell it. It was a very unpleasant experience, but I feel grateful that it was a nice house and the money I got from the sale enabled me to put a deposit down on my own place.

At this point I was 28 and recognised it was time to push the ‘reset’ button on everything. I realised I didn’t enjoy my job at the agency anymore, so I left towards the end of last year with the intention of setting up my own pet subscription box business. Named Milo’s Mail after my own lovely dog, I did run it for about five months whilst also continuing to take marketing-related projects based upon referrals and word of mouth. Unable to manage both streams of work on my own, I gave up Milo’s Mail and officially launched JellyBean in May this year.

Since then I’ve grown the business to a stage where I’ve doubled my monthly client retainer base; landed a contract with one of the UK’s largest airlines; commissioned three amazing ladies to help me run things; and become the only female in Birmingham to have spoken at a number of industry-wide SEO events.

I feel so happy and blessed to have JellyBean, Milo and a fabulous new relationship!
